AI is an enormous privacy and cybersecurity quagmire, and now, Meta is facing major pushback in the European Union for its plans to use private data for its AI projects without user consent. NOYB (none of your business) is a privacy watchdog that has now made almost a dozen formal complaints in the EU. Their concern is that new policies rolling out on June 26 would allow the company to use years of their users’ private data, images, and more — all without consent.

Meta has rejected the claims, and so the fight ensues. NOYB is seeking for Meta to be found in breach of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. That would allow them to be fined up to 4% of the company’s total global turnover.

The US National Security Agency (NSA) is now issuing advice to smartphone users to help them prevent being hacked. Aimed at iOS and Android users, the new best practices guidelines recommend frequently turning phones off and on again, along with a bevy of other best practices, including not using public USB charging stations and avoiding public WiFi networks.

The NSA itself is perhaps the biggest hacking operation in the world. In 2013, Edward Snowden revealed the NSA’s global surveillance operation that included PRISM, which gathered voice, text, and video of foreigners and US citizens without their consent.

A Buffalo man pled guilty to owning 15 unauthorized access devices containing stolen data, all purchased on the Genesis Market. Wul Isaac Chol, 27, also managed to access $25,000 from the New York State Department of Labor.

The news highlights the ongoing issue of the Genesis Market as an easy way to exchange Bitcoin for data. The invitation-only dark web forum has trafficked in credentials for more than 80 million accounts since it launched in 2018, according to expert estimates. In 2023, Genesis Market was seized by the FBI’s Operation Cookie Monster, but it has since returned.
